Salon Paper supplies food-grade cupstock paper from Ningbo, China: 170–210 GSM high-bulk board with PE, PLA or water-based coating for single-wall, double-wall and ripple-wall paper cups. FSC certified, mill test certificates provided, 3,000 tons of base paper consumed per month.
High-bulk uncoated cup board, PE / PLA / water-based coated, for hot and cold drink cups
Cupstock is the uncoated or coated board used to form the body and bottom of a paper cup. Unlike ordinary board, cupstock is high-bulk: it delivers stiffness at lower GSM, which keeps the cup light while resisting deformation when filled with hot liquid.
What matters to a cup converter is not only the GSM but the balance of stiffness, edge wicking at high temperature, and how the board behaves during forming. Those are the properties we test and report on every batch.
| Grade | GSM | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Single-side PE coated | 170–210 | Hot and cold drink cups, standard forming |
| Double-side PE coated | 190–280 | Cold cups, ice cream cups, higher moisture resistance |
| PLA coated | 190–280 | Compostable hot cups, plastic-free food service |
| Water-based / plastic-free coated | 190–280 | Recyclable cups, PPWR-aligned packaging |
| Double-wall outer board | 230–300 | Double-wall and ripple-wall cup sleeves |
Thickness typically runs 0.30–0.45 mm depending on grade. Board can be supplied in reels for cup forming machines or in sheets.
| Coating | Barrier | Compostable | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| PE | Excellent water and grease barrier | No | Lowest cost, the industry default |
| PLA | Good water and grease barrier | Industrial composting | Bio-based, replaces PE in hot cups |
| Water-based | Good water barrier, good grease | Recyclable in the paper stream | Plastic-free, repulpable |
| PHA | Good water and grease barrier | Home and industrial composting | Highest performing, premium cost |
Every batch ships with a mill test certificate covering GSM, thickness, Taber stiffness, Cobb value, moisture and brightness. Food-contact documentation is available for FDA and EU 1935/2004 / 10/2011; LFGB and SGS reports are issued on request. FSC chain-of-custody is available for virgin-fibre grades.
See our cupstock paper technical specifications for the full test-method table (ISO / TAPPI / GB), and the raw materials guide for how each coating behaves in converting.

Cupstock is the high-bulk board used to form the body and bottom of a paper cup. It delivers stiffness at lower GSM than ordinary board, so the cup stays light while resisting deformation when filled with hot liquid.
Single-side PE coated cupstock is typically 170-210 GSM. Double-side coated, PLA and water-based coated grades run 190-280 GSM, and double-wall outer board is 230-300 GSM.
PE gives the best water and grease barrier at the lowest cost but is not compostable. PLA is bio-based and industrially compostable, with slightly lower heat resistance and a higher price.
Yes. Water-based (aqueous) coatings are repulpable, so the cup can go into the normal paper recycling stream. PE coated cups generally cannot.
MOQ is 25 tons per grade and size. We also quote on finished cups at 100,000 pcs per size and design.
