Paper calculation formulas
- Roll length (m) = Roll weight (kg) × 1,000,000 ÷ (GSM × Roll width in mm)
- Sheets per roll = Roll length (m) × 1,000 ÷ Cut sheet length (mm)
- Weight per sheet (g) = GSM × (Sheet width in m) × (Sheet length in m)
- Cost per sheet (USD) = Weight per sheet (g) ÷ 1,000,000 × Price (USD/ton)
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the length of a paper roll?
Divide the roll weight in kilograms by the paper grammage (GSM) and the roll width in metres. Because GSM is grams per square metre, roll weight × 1,000,000 ÷ (GSM × width in mm) gives the roll length in metres.
How many sheets can I cut from one roll?
Divide the roll length in millimetres by the cut sheet length. For example a 12,000 m roll cut into 1,194 mm sheets yields about 10,050 sheets.
What GSM is used for paper cups and packaging board?
Paper cup stock is typically 170–350 gsm, ivory board and folding box board 200–400 gsm, and coated art board 200–400 gsm. Use the calculator above to convert any of these grades.
