PHA Biodegradation Certificates

Our PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate) raw material is certified by TÜV AUSTRIA GMBH under the OK compost and OK biodegradable conformity schemes. Four certificates cover home composting, soil, fresh water and seawater degradation — for the grades PB1001ST, PB3D01 and PB2001IM in resin or granulate form.

How to read a PHA biodegradation certificate

  • The certificates apply to the PHA raw material (resin / granules) as supplied, and — per TÜV AUSTRIA — only to specimens bearing the corresponding conformity mark.
  • Certification is thickness-specific. The certified maximum nominal thickness in film form is 0.985 mm for OK compost HOME and 0.25 mm for OK biodegradable MARINE.
  • Biodegradation of a finished article depends on its own thickness, structure and coating weight — please ask us to confirm before you print a claim on your packaging.
  • Heavy metals are regulated locally (the WATER certificate references EN 13432 Annex A table A.1). Check the limits applicable in your market.
  • Always quote the certificate number and validity period; the PDF is the authoritative document.

Where we use PHA in paper packaging

PHA is a bio-based polymer used as a coating or film layer where compostability and low environmental persistence matter. Typical applications we supply:

Frequently asked questions about PHA certification

What is a PHA biodegradation certificate?

It is an independent conformity certificate issued by TUV AUSTRIA GMBH confirming that a PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate) raw material biodegrades in a defined environment - home compost, soil, fresh water or seawater - under the OK compost and OK biodegradable certification schemes.

What is the difference between OK compost HOME and OK biodegradable?

OK compost HOME certifies biodegradation under home-composting conditions (lower and more variable temperatures). OK biodegradable certifies degradation in a defined natural environment: SOIL, WATER (fresh water) or MARINE (seawater). A material can carry one or several of these marks depending on which tests it passed.

Is PHA biodegradable in the sea?

Yes. Our PHA grades PB1001ST and PB3D01 hold the OK biodegradable MARINE certificate TA8062509129 (valid 15 May 2025 - 15 May 2030), which covers degradation in seawater for film up to 0.25 mm nominal thickness.

What thickness of PHA is covered by the certificates?

Certification is thickness-specific. The OK compost HOME certificate covers film up to 0.985 mm nominal thickness; the OK biodegradable MARINE certificate covers film up to 0.25 mm. Whether a finished product biodegrades as certified depends on its actual thickness and construction.

Do the certificates apply to the finished packaging product?

The certificates are issued for the PHA raw material (resin / granulate) and, per TUV AUSTRIA, only for specimens bearing the conformity mark. A finished article made with PHA-coated or PHA-laminated paper has to be assessed against its own thickness, structure and the requirements of the destination market.

How can I verify these certificates?

Each certificate shows the TUV AUSTRIA certificate number (TA8022509135, TA8032408809, TA8042408810, TA8062509129), the licensee Beijing PhaBuilder Biotechnology Co., Ltd, and the validity period. The PDF files on this page are the certificates issued to us, and they can be verified with TUV AUSTRIA.
